ASUP FEDPOD CHAPTER PAYS SOLIDARITY VISIT TO MANAGEMENT OF THE POLYTECHNIC, COMMENDS PROGRESS AND SEEKS FURTHER SUPPORT

The leadership and members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Ohodo Chapter, paid a solidarity and courtesy visit to the Management of the Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, Enugu State, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to industrial harmony, academic progress and institutional development.

Presenting a communiqué on behalf of the Union, at the event which took place on May 19, 2026, at the Rector’s office, the leader of the delegation and Chairman of ASUP FEDPOD Chapter, Awarajih Uwaezuoke PhD, commended the Management for its support for Institutional Based Research (IBR), staff participation in conferences and workshops, staff training and capacity building, as well as the inclusion of the Union in relevant standing committees of the Polytechnic. The Union noted that these efforts have strengthened participatory administration and contributed positively to the growth of the institution.

The Union, however, appealed for urgent attention to some matters affecting staff welfare and effective institutional operations. Among the key issues raised were improper placement of staff by the previous administration, payment of the outstanding 28-day relocation allowance, improved functionality of laboratories and equipment, timely provision of instructional and teaching materials, allocation of land to the Union, access to fabrication grants for technologists and engineers, adherence to the academic calendar with effective communication, and support for a proposed sports competition involving staff and students.

Responding, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, Enugu State (FEDPOD), Dr. Ediri Emmanuel Agada, gave detailed assurances on the concerns raised and expressed Management’s readiness to continue engaging the Union in the overall interest of the Polytechnic. He explained that some of the issues brought forward were already receiving Management’s attention, especially matters relating to staff welfare and institutional improvement. On the issue of the outstanding 28-day relocation allowance, the Rector indicated that Management was not opposed to payment, but noted that such financial obligations require due budgetary provision and the availability of funds through the appropriate channels.

On infrastructure and academic support facilities, the Rector acknowledged the need to improve laboratories, workshops and related equipment in addition to the already existing State-of-the-art facilities, while also noting that Management was aware of existing gaps in some of the installed facilities. He further disclosed that approvals had been made for the procurement of some additional teaching and practical materials.

On the Union’s request for land, he hinted at Management’s readiness to allocate a portion of land on campus for ASUP’s use, while also assuring the Union of the Polytechnic’s support for sports and sporting activities on campus.

Also speaking, other Principal Officers aligned with the Rector’s position. The Deputy Rector, Dr. Cornelius O. Ogayi, commented on the issue of the academic calendar, explaining that some very vital considerations like peculiar admission processes/realities of the Polytechnic and the need for necessary approvals by the Academic Board sometimes affect scheduling decisions.

The Registrar, Dr. Obini Onuchukwu, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Mrs. Ifeanyi Patricia Ozobu, thanked the ASUP team for their thoughtful visit and appreciated the gifts brought to the Principal Officers, expressing optimism that such engagements would yield positive results.

The Bursar, Mrs. Umolaojo Angela Sani, on her part, addressed the financial concerns raised and linked some of the challenges to funding realities and processes involving relevant government authorities, but however reassured the entire staff of the Institution that efforts are in top gear to ensure that whatever is due to them is duly processed and secured by her office.

The Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Albert Obiora Elejene, appreciated the Union leadership for its well-articulated presentation and urged continued cordiality and better understanding between Management and staff.

The visit ended on a cordial note, with both Management and ASUP FEDPOD Chapter reaffirming the need for sustained cooperation, mutual respect and shared commitment to the advancement of the institution.

A major highlight of the visit was the presentation of framed portrait gifts and other items by the ASUP FEDPOD Chapter delegation to the Rector and other Principal Officers of the Polytechnic.
